Beer Review

Slottskällans Kloster 2006

Well todays beer is of a more interesting character compared to the previous one i reviewed. As the title suggests this is the 2006 vintage of Slottskällans Kloster. Abbey style beer, 33cl bottle at 9% ABV.

It pours a hazy red tinted brown with a quickly disapearing head. The aroma is quite potent with some bread, spice and a almost syrupy sweetness, red fruits and there is even a slight hint of alcohol in it but that is very faint. Overall the nose is quite indistinct and it is quite hard to distinguish the various components. It does of course have a Belgian style smell to it, but i was kind of expecting that given the style.

The taste actually surprised me a bit though, with that amount of aroma, even if indistinguishable, i was expecting the taste to very potent and for the somewhat indistinguishable components to open up a bit, but it is in fact quite round and slightly mild for the style but overall quite balanced. Very surprising considering that its 9% ABV. Bit of spice, fruitiness and very slight bit of alcohol in the aftertaste. An interesting licorice like nature develops in the aftertaste over time, i could have wished that the flavor lingered a bit more though, it disappears quite quickly.

I have a hard time making my mind up about this, but i think the best conclusion to make is that when a brewery choose to do a belgian quadrupel styled beer, you are going up against some really tough competition and for me i would never chose this over, say, a Rochefort 10 for example.

Its not bad, but its not great either. If you’re new to this style of beer and you want a quadrupel that is somewhat basic but gives some of the main components of the beer style without the complex nature of flavors that most people enjoy about the quad’s then i would recomend giving this beer i try. Hard to make up my mind about the score for this one but the conclusion is:

Rating: 6/10

First speed

19May08

Decided to start posting speed paintings here as well. I will try to put one or two up every week.

Im really out of practice so the first bunch of these will be quite bad. Todays speed i didnt have too much time to dedicate on, around 40 minutes. I went for more of an expressive look and the proportions are way off, but i wanted to create a sort of quirky looking character. It does actually bother me quite a lot that the proportions are so off so i guess the next one will be a bit more realistic ;D

Gotlands Bryggeri Wisby Weisse

Ok, i was hoping to kick off with a bigger beer to celebrate the first beer review in my blog, but since my hang over does not really allow that i chose to start with a rather mild style. This is a German style Weisse beer, brewed by Gotlands Bryggeri. 50cl bottle at 5,2% ABV.

Color is quite nice hazy yellowy orange, but is it any good?

The nose is quite gentle, most pronounced is the slight flowery aroma mixed in with some fruits, wheat and a slight bit of malt. Banana and toffee springs to mind.

The taste is a bit shallow, with a somewhat quickly disappearing and quite bitter aftertaste. Taste is overall very watery. Some fruitiness with a bit of wheat but it leaves a lot to be desired. Some fruitiness also develops in the aftertaste over time, mostly banana and figs.

Overall this one didn’t really do much for me, but I guess the bitterness and the rather gentle taste could make it a pretty ok summer beverage if served very chilled. One thing that has to be said is that this is quite different from what I expect a weisse beer to taste.

I can’t really find a better word to describe this beer than “average”.

I find myself pondering if I’m slowly going insane as I’m starting to enjoy working these crazy hours. Leaving the office at 02:30 am today and feel very happy and clear mentally.

I suppose this might have the simple explanation of seeing things coming togheter on our project. After months of hard work, adding more and more work until it piled up and formed what at the time almost felt like an unclimbable mountain. It is very nice to finally start seeing the contours of a light in the end of the tunnel. Even though the hours might be long and it will require a lot of effort, it looks like it will be “down hill” from here.

Areas of my work that i saw as problems are finally starting to come togheter in a very positive way and overall i think i might just be happy with the end result.

Parts of our office building at night, on the left, looks quite e(a)vil doesn’t it?

Leaving the office after yet another day of overtime.

To accompany todays blog update, I’m including some pictures i took while walking home. Interesting to try and take some pictures while actually walking 🙂

Unlike most days recently, didnt actually manage to leave the office before around midnight.

Boy oh boy isnt it a glamorous life working in the games industry?

Lastly but most importantly, tomorrow is a big day in terms of beer! ;D Tomorrow Systembolaget will be getting a limited amount of Mikkeller Black 37,5 cl champagne top bottles and 50cl Nøgne Ø Klin Kokkos bottles, and in a few weeks time they will also be getting Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfest as well as North Coast Old Rasputin Impy :D!

Tasting reports will be arriving as soon as these bottles are bought and in my nest. 🙂

And with this, i depart, or rather, in that picture a co worker departs.

The birth of my new blog

I figured i might as well use this blog for something. So this will be a place where i dump my random thoughts, be it about game development, living in stockholm or beer tasting. I guess the next natural step would be to buy a macbook and spend a lot of time in cafe’s and supplying you with constant updates of whats going on in my life 😉 I will try to avoid that my blog turns into that and limit this blog to any new developments when it comes to beer, architecture, arts or such that i find interesting enough to write about.

This post will however be more of a “whats been happening recently” for those who might find it interesting 🙂

The BEER

As far as beer goes this has been a really good year so far for me, among the new beers ive tried in 2008 there have been a few awesome experiences like Närke Kaggen! Stormaktsporter 2006, Struise Pannepot Oak Aged Grand Reserva, Struise Pannepøtt, Mikkeller Black Hole, Vintage De Dolle Oerbier (1998), the very famed Westvleteren 12, Rogue SX Imp Stout, Gonzo Imperial Porter, De Dolle Stille Nacht, Drie Fonteinen Oeude Geuzue, Mikkeller Draft Bear, Cantillon Geuzue, North Coast Old Rasputin and the list could go on forever but theese are some of the highlights of whats been in my glass for the first time in 2008.

Yesterday was not exception really, after a bottle of wine to go with the meal i had i continued with a Drie Fonteinen Ouede Geuze which has to be my favorite Geuzue beer. Very light, very refreshing yet complex and enjoyable. Perfect for a warm summer day and truely a champagne of the beer world. Later on i shared a 75cl bottle of La Trappe Quadruppel with two friends of mine from work and with it we had chocolate truffles, was a very good companion for this sweet beer and as my first taste of La Trappe’s quad, i have to say that i did enjoy it a lot. With the chocolate it was the perfect desert to finish the evening off.

To sum the beer talk of today up here’s is a picture of the La Trappe aftermath and a picture of another highlight this year which was the second bottle of Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon 1st Edition ive had, which is from this easter 🙂

Life, work and the rest

Well, what can one say, its been a hectic few months for me. Crunching heavy on Mirror’s Edge. Stuff is starting to look pretty good but its not without having to put some effort into it. Worked way too much in March and April and have been trying to relax a bit now in May before i pick up the crazy work hours again. One thing i will say is that i doubt i will be doing another 25 hour stretch at work as i did a few weeks ago.

For those of you that havent seen it, we released the first footage of our game a week or so ago.

Dont know what more to say, except for what i mentioned most of my time goes into taking pictures of co workers next to crooked things as such

Oh yes, and crashing partys. This saturday me and a co worker decided to see what was going on in the floor above our offices. It was quite a bizzare experience as we stuck out like crazy. Everyone was around 50 years old, wearing suits and it turned out it was the 50th anniversary for a company that does refrigerated boat transporting of foods. Felt kinda weird crashing their party, drinking their champagne and such as we stood out so much that we within the first 30 seconds of entering party got questions about who we where and why we where there. Good times!

Thats it for now! I will continue to post some updates on this blog more frequently now (not let it go 1 year between posts). Next time i will be including a lot more pictures as i wish to do this as more of a photography style blog rather than a random compilation of text and thoughts related to my life 🙂

And what am i currently listening to? That would have to be dEUS – The Architect.

Hei hå!
